Revised Bighorn Action Centre now online
Wildcanada.net Action Alert -- 075
Friday August 2, 2002
The Alberta government declared the Bighorn Wildland east of Banff and Jasper
National Parks protected in 1986, but never followed up on the announcement with
legislation. Now the area is threatened by oil and gas development and off
highway vehicle use. The AWA and Wildcanada.net are asking the government to
live up to their promise by providing legislation to protect the area.
A revised Bighorn Wildland Action Centre, complete with a new letter to Premier
Klein asking him to protect the Bighorn Wildland is available at
http://www.wildcanada.net and clicking on Action Central. Timely action now will
spring board off of recent pressure surrounding the G8 Summit to protect
wildlands in Alberta.
Background
The Bighorn Wildland contains crucial and irreplaceable habitat for grizzlies
and other wildlife. Its watersheds provide clean drinking water to central
Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. And the area's backcountry recreation
opportunities are among the best in Alberta.
The threat of industrial development and damage due to motorized recreation in
the Bighorn Wildland is immediate. We need to take action now before the
wildlife and recreation values are destroyed.
Action
Please take a few moments to visit the Action Centre and send a free fax to
Premier Klein.

you have done this before, a new letter is available to send.
